Congenital cataract is defined as loss of transparency of the cornea in one or both eyes since birth. Drugs that are used during pregnancy or mother’s diseases during pregnancy can cause as far as it can be idiopathic. In babies who has congenital cataract one cornea can be in different color (white) or strabismus can be present. It is mandatory to consult a Pediatric Ophthalmologist as soon as possible when the situation is suspected. The only treatment option for congenital cataract is surgery. The most important problem in the eye which has cataract is amblyopia. For this particular reason if the cataract is blocking the sight and located at one side, surgery must be performed in the early period. In congenital cataract surgery is performed by FAKO method. In the babies who is old enough collapsible lens is placed inside the eye. After lens placement bifocal eye glasses and closure treatment are started. In very small babies until the age gets old enough to place intraocular lens, contact lens usage is recommended. The most important part of the treatment is fighting against the amblyopia. According to the degree of amblyopia, the closure time of the eye changes. The cooperation between the family and the physician is very important. If the family can’t help the surgery is useless. The children must be followed up for many years after the surgery. It can result total blindness which can not be treated. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important.
