Conjunctivitis and Congestion in the Eye
In the first 15 days of life conjunctivitis and congestion can be seen in the babies. The day after birth which conjunctivitis started, the color and the consistency of the pus is important. The treatment must be started by the pediatric ophthalmologist. Congestions and conjunctivitis start after 1 or 2 months after birth could not require treatment. If it lasts more than 1- or 2-days eye drops can be prescribed.
Congestion of the eye can be related to the cornea. If the baby narrows his/her eyes and eyes are watery additionally, a pediatric ophthalmology consultation is mandatory.
Watery Eyes
Watery eyes which starts just after the birth or in the first 2 weeks’ time can be due to the narrowing or blockage of the nasolacrimal ducts of the one or both eyes. If the blockage is complete conjunctivitis can accompany. In this kind of conjunctivitis congestion is not prominent. If conjunctivitis is present, proper cleaning of the eye combined with eye drop and massage to open the duct is needed. Generally, this situation resolves in the first 6 months by proper massage. If the watery eyes prolong to the age of 1 and conjunctivitis is repeatedly seen opening of the duct by a catheter is needed.
